Regulations and CE marking of roller doors

The European Union establishes a series of requirements that all products must comply with in compliance with current legislation. In this way, the safety and maximum quality of the products that are marketed in the European territory is guaranteed. One of the ways to certify that a product meets these requirements is through CE marking.

What is CE marking?

The CE marking is a labelling through which a manufacturer informs users and competent authorities that the products placed on the market comply with the mandatory legislation in force regarding the essential requirements that products in the European Union must meet.

In the event that the product in question does not meet the essential requirements, the manufacturer will not be able to use this marking. However, the characteristics that each product must meet in order to obtain the CE marking will depend on its nature and destination.

What regulations govern the CE marking of roller doors?

The standard that regulates the CE marking of rolling doors is the UNE-EN 12453:2018 standard, developed by the European Committee for Standardization by mandate of the European Commission, and applicable to industrial, commercial and garage and gate doors. Roller shutters must meet a number of conditions, as this is the only way to ensure the safety of the people who are going to use them.

Aspects to take into account to comply with the CE marking regulations on roller doors

The UNE-EN 12453:2018 standard establishes a series of requirements and conditions that rolling doors must meet in order to be eligible for the CE marking, which is essential for any product marketed in the European Union. These mandatory requirements are as follows:

Doors with a moving die-cut slat must not be able to lift a person dangerously. To do this, polycarbonate or methacrylate must be placed or, failing that, put the door in Man present on the ascent. If we want the door to operate automatically, then all the mechanisms must be put in place so that this cannot happen, such as exterior and interior photocells and others.

People cannot be trapped in areas where a motorized door is the only possible exit. This must be the case even in the event of a door motor failure or electrical failure. For them, the engine must always have an unlocking in the case of a central shaft motor or a manual system with crank in the case of a tubular motor.

Roller doors must be installed in accordance with the installation instructions established by the manufacturer, which, in any case, must be easily understood and must adequately describe how to carry out the installation process.

Roller doors may only be installed by qualified personnel, who will also be responsible for their maintenance and the appropriate checks.

During the installation process of the roller shutter door, qualified personnel must carry out a series of tests, so that it is verified that the door meets all safety and quality standards. Only in this case can the CE marking plate be affixed.

The installer is responsible for delivering all the documentation from the door manufacturer to the end customer, giving them the declaration of conformity, declaration of performance, CE marking label and the maintenance book, it is important to note that he also has to deliver a maintenance budget for the door with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

These are some obligations and recommendations, in future posts we will continue to address this interesting topic and that on the other hand is so unknown to many. As you can see, the regulations are clear in terms of the characteristics that roller doors must have and in relation to their installation and maintenance process in order to guarantee everyone’s safety.
